The BBC Blast Truck will be parking up on Parker’s Piece, right in the heart of Cambridge, as part of The Big Weekend.  It will be giving young people who are passionate about art, music, filmmaking, dance and more, a chance to get creative, meet industry professionals and learn new skills.

The BBC Blast Truck offers young people an opportunity to explore a variety of free workshops, surgeries and showcase events whatever their ability.

The truck, which has recently embarked on a staggering 30-week UK tour, houses a mobile learning studio, complete with a television studio, VT/audio editing area, digital workshop area and a separate performance space to help users create their ideas.  Industry professionals and local facilitators are on hand to offer expert advice and support.

Highlights will include:

  • Rock school – get the chance to strum out loud, join a group of like-minded others and form a band who’ll perform live, for one night only, a stunning set on the Blast Marquee stage.
  • Performance – join in a two-day performing workshop with International film artist and artist-in-residence at Wysing Arts, Shezad Dawood.
  • Dance – from slick street dance to boundless breakdance, join in with Dance Offensive as they take you through a hard-paced, fun-packed, high-kicking series of moves with Malcolm Mbobo, Sunanda and Parasite Productions.
  • Sound and Film – hook up with nationally acclaimed multi-media performance company, Escape Artists, and join in with a two day music and film workshop which celebrates the work of Syd Barrett, whose songs launched one of the most influential bands of all time, Pink Floyd.
  • Radio – discover what it takes to be a DJ/radio presenter, how to compile great radio and how to present live broadcasts run by BBC radio experts with guest slots from Radio One Newsbeat, Cambridge's Community Radio Station - 209 Radio and some of those more familiar Cambridge faces!
  • Manga in Motion workshop - create your own Manga characters and then scan them and cut them into a motion graphics sequence, then at the end of the workshop take away your own movie - with Sweatdrop Studios and FDMX (The Film and Digital Media Exchange).
  • Machinima masterclass - find out all about the future face of filmmaking.

Emma Borley, Blast co-ordinator says: “Blast’s aim is simple: to encourage young people to express themselves through creativity. We’ve got some great workshops lined up and it’s a brilliant opportunity to develop new skills, work with experts and make valuable new contacts.  We’re thrilled to be working in collaboration with The Cambridge Film Festival, Cambridgeshire Film Consortium, Cambridge City Council, FDMX and some of the best arts providers throughout the county”.

This year also sees even more opportunities arising with hundreds of work experiences, traineeship and reporter placements for a number of young people around the UK. The experience helps develop a deeper confidence in their own creativity by working with industry mentors and professionals.

Workshops must be booked in advance. For more details on the tour and to book a space visit www.bbc.co.uk/blast or email blast-cambridge@bbc.co.uk.
