This course has been devised by two experienced drama and film practitioners who have worked extensively within the Criminal Justice System. One of the workshop leaders, Richmond Trew, has, himself, spent time in prison and is also a father, so he has a strong understanding of the difficulties confronting young men in prison. Richmond regularly runs parenting classes for young adults in both community and custodial settings.
The workshop is usually delivered over 4 days and addresses a range of issues facing young fathers when in prison and on release.
Through role play and interactive exercises the workshops cover such areas as:
- Developing an understanding of family dynamics
- Learning skills, such as bedtime reading for young children, that can help them to become happy and well-behaved
- How to handle behaviour problems
- Where to find information about schools and education
- How to exert discipline without getting angry
- Knowing what to expect at the different stages in a child's development
- Helping children with their homework
Comprehensive information about support services is also provided throughout.
Primarily suitable for custodial settings this workshop can also be adjusted to meet the needs of young people in the community.
